How to Size Your Pool Table
Getting the right fit for your game room

Playing pool is both an art form and a relaxing hobby for people of all ages. If you're thinking of honing your abilities, you may be casting an eye toward a spare room in your house, or even looking to finish off your existing game room with one of these staples. Three of the most important things to remember when measuring a table to fit a room are where the table is going to sit, how much clearance you'll have for your cues, and the best placement for the table in relation to obstructions.  
 
Pool Table What you need to know:
Standard Pool Table Sizes:
  • 3.5' x 7'
  • 4' x 8'
  • 4.25' x 8.5'
  • 4.5' x 9'
Standard Cue Stick Size:
  • 58"
“Shorty" cues are available in 38", 48", and 52" lengths; these smaller cue sticks are a great way to maneuver around beams without having to sacrifice the fun of the game.
As a general rule, your pool table room should follow this equation:
  • Length of the pool table + (2 x length of cue) = room length
  • Width of the pool table + (2 x length of cue) = room width
If you have a 58" standard cue stick, it will need to be able to extend its entire body twice: 58" x 2 = 116".
 
We'll do the math:
Your pool table measures: 8' (l) x 4.5' (w) OR 96" (l) x 54" (w)
Your standard cue stick measures: 58"
Room length needed: 96" + (2 x 58") = 214" or 17.7'
Room width needed: 54" + (2 x 58") = 170" or 14.1'
You will need a room that measures at least 17.7' x 14.1' to accommodate an 8' x 4.5' standard pool table.
 
Rooms with Obstructions:
There are things you can move to accommodate your table, and then there are support beams.   Support beams can mean an ideal game room—or no game room at all. If your basement has a beam, set up your pool table with the beam kitty-corner to one of the corners of the table; this way, you'll be able to shoot from the side and ends with minimal interference.
