Having a hard time hitting the bull's-eye? Learn how to throw like a pro! Take some time to read the basics on how-to improve your choice of dart, stance, aim and throwing style. Don't know where to start? Follow the steps below to improve your dart game quickly and easily.

#1

Dart Choice

Your choice of barrel, shaft and flight depends a great deal on your throwing style and personal preference. In competitions a dart cannot weigh more than 50g and cannot be over 300mm in length. Tungsten is an incredibly dense material, and offers the most consistent weight, with the smallest barrel size for tighter groupings.

Check your stance

A proper stance will set up your entire dart game. In order to line up properly, look at the bull's-eye and imagine a line from there to the throwing line. Approach the toe line like you are about to shake hands with someone on the other side of it. Always have your feet shoulder width apart, stand up straight and position your shoulder parallel to the ground. Remember, no lunging.

Grip properly

There isn't a right or wrong grip. Hold the grip not too loosely or too tightly, but enough to comfortably throw it. Brass and nickel are less dense, which means the barrels that use these components are thicker. Thicker barrels will help new players keep a consistant grip. Keep your free fingers open to avoid muscle strain and pointing the tip downward. From there, hold the dart comfortably.

Throwing Basics

Align your shoulder, elbow and hand into a straight line for proper balance and mechanics. To steady your throwing motion use your hand, wrist and elbow for speed and use your shoulder as support. Keep your dart pointed directly at the target at all times. Stance plays an important part, even the slightest slouch or sway can throw off your aim.

#5

Aiming

When you are aiming at the dartboard it's important to find a sight line. Be sure to line up your shot consistently (some use their first of second knuckle on the thumb of your throwing hand). Lead your throw with your elbow by pointing it directly at the dartboard. Always aim directly at your target. Even if you miss, do not try and overcompensate for the previous throw.
